Welcome to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
performed by Gemco Players October 2025.
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved children's book. The story follows a young boy named Charlie Bucket, who wins a golden ticket to tour the mysterious and magical chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka.

Please Note: To audition for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” you must be aged 8+ by the end of the year, 31 December 2025.
ACTING:
Audition material will be available for principal characters. If you believe you can play the role then we want to see you audition for it.
Dialogue is not required to be memorised, but we expect a good understanding of the text, and we want to see you bring the character to life.
SINGING:
Principal Role Auditions: 10 minutes in length. Please prepare 1 song of your choice in the style of the show. We want to hear you singing at your best, choose a song that shows off your vocal talents.
Ensemble: Part of a song will be taught by the MD and you will then sing this in small groups.
You may be asked to also sing solo if the panel identifies role possibilities.
Dance Workshop Auditions:
All auditionees will be required to attend the dance/movement component of the auditions on the 7th or 8th June. The dance audition will be split into two groups and consist of a dance warm up followed by a short routine. Once the set routine is learnt, auditionees will then perform the number in smaller groups. We will be looking for cast members who can listen to direction, learn and perform the routine quickly and show performance quality.
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can safely dance in. No socks or bare feet.
The specialist dance call will be for those featured dancers in the Golden Ticket Winner scenes and Oompa Loompa scenes. This will consist of a technique component to assess dance ability, high energy and characterisation and then re-perform the routine learnt in the movement auditions.

A rehearsal schedule will be provided
Rehearsal Commitment: Rehearsal schedules will be organised and distributed by the production team in advance of our rehearsals.
Please list any known absences on your audition form to ensure we can schedule accordingly.
Continuous unexplained absences will result in missing numbers if you are not there to learn the content.
We rehearse Tuesday, Thursday and every 2nd Sunday; if you’re called, you’re expected to attend. You will not be required at every rehearsal.
To accommodate costume fittings, a full cast photoshoot and some rehearsals to achieve full runs of the show before bumping in to the theatre, there may also be the need for some rehearsals to start earlier on Sundays, plenty of notice will be given.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Willy Wonka / Candy Man
Willy Wonka is an enigmatic character; at once mysterious and mischievous but also charismatic. The role will require someone who is charismatic, engaging and has a great voice. The actor should be able to be funny and serious and change between the two on a dime. Wonka will double as the Candy Man, as it helps reinforce that Wonka has staged the Golden Ticket competition and is somewhat controlling this contest along the way.

Charlie Bucket
Charlie Bucket is the emotional heart and soul of the musical. Sweet, smart, hopeful and loving. A boy with wonderful innocence and vulnerability. The earnest and kind-hearted young protagonist of the story. Charlie comes from a poor family but dreams of a better life. He is selfless, compassionate, and possesses an unwavering moral compass. Charlie's integrity and pure heart lead him to be the final Golden Ticket winner.
The actor performing Charlie is in nearly every scene, so will need to handle the demands of a sizable role. Charlie should be a great singer, excellent actor, and hopefully reads as younger onstage.

Grandpa Joe
Grandpa Joe is the grandfather we all wish we had when we were Charlie's age. He is caring, patient, sweet, and always reminds Charlie to look on the bright side. He is Charlie's imaginative, fun, kind and loving grandfather. After many years being confined to a bed, his childish energy returns when Charlie finds the Golden Ticket. Charlie's kind-hearted and supportive grandfather. Grandpa Joe is full of life and adventure, and he is Charlie's companion on the tour of the chocolate factory.

Mrs. Bucket
Charlie Bucket's warm, loving, kind-hearted nurturing mother. She is always trying to maintain an energetic positivity.

Quick-witted, cheerful, elderly woman. Not much singing required.

Grandma Georgina
Exasperated with Grandpa George because he is hard of hearing. Ability to holler at him in a controlled way. Funny elderly woman. Not much singing required.

“Hard of hearing” elderly man brings humour and crazy conversation to the house. Good sense of comedic timing. Not much singing required.

Oompa-Loompa Chorus
The Oompa-Loompa Chorus will need to be energetic, and be able to sing and dance.
They need to have good stage presence to convey the mischievous and comical nature of the Oompa Loompas.

Augustus Gloop
A gluttonous, overweight child who finds one of the Golden Tickets. Augustus is known for his insatiable appetite, and his love for food often leads him into trouble. *German Accent will be required*

Mrs. Gloop
Mrs. Gloop is Augustus' mother who has overindulged her son with food. She accompanies Augustus on the tour of the factory, and sings "I Eat More!" She has a bustling personality. *German Accent will be required*

Mike Teavee
Mike is not just a TV junky. He is also addicted to video games, the Internet and any other mind-numbing technological device. Mike is bratty, loud and obnoxious. He does not understand the word "no."

Ms. Teavee
Ms. Teavee is a take on all television moms of the distant past. She's perfectly put together and Vain, pompous, somewhat squeamish, easily rattled, high-strung. She sings "I See It All On TV" She is Mike Teavee's mother, who struggles to connect with her son due to his obsession with technology. *American Accent may be required*

Violet Beauregarde
Sassy, forceful, rude. Takes advantage of others, full of attitude. Violet is a world-champion gum chewer and boasts of her accomplishments. She embodies the sin of pride. "Queen of Pop" is a pop-inspired song, reflecting Violet's obsession with fame and her belief that she is the best. The song incorporates modern pop elements and catchy hooks.

Violet's father, who is just as competitive and boastful as his daughter. He is obsessed with her success and is eager to capitalise on her newfound fame.

Veruca Salt
Veruca is wealthy, class-conscious, and completely spoiled.
Vicious and determined. A spoiled and bratty young girl who also discovers a Golden Ticket. Veruca is used to getting anything she wants and throws tantrums when she doesn't. She symbolises the vice of greed.

Mr. Salt
Veruca's affluent father, who indulges her every whim and showers her with expensive gifts. He believes that money can solve any problem. Finds it impossible to say no, giving in to every ridiculous demand his daughter makes.

Cherry
A zany and quick-witted reporter who adds a delightful dash of humour to the piece. The reporter is "on the scene" for all our golden ticket winners.

Another reporter who is the bearer of bad news for Charlie's golden ticket ventures but is full of wacky energy while doing so

Ensemble
The Ensemble is essential to the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with many great scenes throughout the production. Some Ensemble roles include Oompa Loompas, Gum Chompin Divas, Reporters, Squirrels, Bavarians, Cheer Squad.
